Arsenal's late top-four bid can get new boost

Arsenal's win over Manchester United on Sunday means Wednesday's trip to Southampton could yet be vital in the race for the top four.
The Gunners go to St Mary's still with a chance of a top-four Premier League finish this season - something that had looked very unlikely just a few weeks ago.

Arsene Wenger's side have benefited from slip-ups from United, Manchester City and Liverpool in recent games to leave them still in the race to land Champions League football for next term, although their destiny does remain just out of their own hands.

With all those aforementioned teams not in league action until next weekend, the Gunners' can put the pressure on with another three points against Saints and move to within three of City, who are currently fourth.

Arsenal have won three of their last four matches and finally decided to turn up in a big game when they disposed of United over the weekend without too much fuss. So they will approach the south-coast trip with confidence.

St Mary's is a stadium where they have had wildly fluctuating fortunes recently, as they brushed Claude Puel's side away 5-0 in the FA Cup in January but were thrashed 4-0 there in the league last season.

Worryingly for Wenger, his side have not won on any of their previous five visits to Saints, who can be backed at n/a to win on Wednesday, in the league so it is usually somewhere they struggle to click into gear at, aside from that most recent cup success.

Puel's men are well used to frustrating the big boys in the last few years and carried out another defensive master plan at Liverpool on Sunday to come away from Anfield with a 0-0 draw. A second draw in succession, which will tempt plenty, is available at n/a.

They are safely in mid-table but could finish as high as eighth and will want to push on in their four remaining games by surely showing more attacking intent in front of their own fans this week.

That could play into Arsenal's hands, however, and, as unpredictable as the Gunners can be, this should see them emerge victorious, with an away win on offer at n/a, as they aim to finish what has been a disappointing campaign so far on a high.

Recommended bet: Away win or draw: n/a.
