Germany should fear Chile test

Germany were edgy in their Confederations Cup opener against Australia and Chile can test them in their next group clash on Thursday.
The world champions, who are n/a to win, have taken a youthful squad to Russia for the eight-team tournament and it showed at times in their Group B opener against the Socceroos as they could only manage a 3-2 victory.

Admittedly, the scoreline flattered Australia as Germany keeper Bernd Leno was at fault for both of the goals conceded but Chile will be a much sterner test.

Boss Joachim Low has left established internationals like Mesut Ozil, Manuel Neuer, Mats Hummels and Thomas Muller at home but there is still plenty of exciting talent in Russia, with Julian Brandt, Leon Goretzka and Julian Draxler among those expected to deliver.

Low admitted the first game has thrown up plenty of questions for his side to know answer and he is wary of the threat posed by Thursday's opponents, who are n/a to pick up another victory and take charge of the group.

"It is definitely a good thing that not everything went well. Now we know what we need to work on," he said. "Chile are definitely one of the best teams in the world. They have fantastic individual quality and are very versatile tactically in a way that most teams are not.

"They are an absolute top-class team."

The South Americans are ranked fourth in the world, one place behind Die Mannschafft, and kicked off their campaign with a 2-0 success over Colombia, achieved with goals in the last 10 minutes from Arturo Vidal and Eduardo Vargas - unsurprisingly after one of their star men, Alexis Sanchez, had come off the bench.

Sanchez has been struggling with an ankle injury but is expected to be fit to start against the Germans, for whom Kevin Trapp and Marc-Andre ter Stegen are battling to replace Leno in goal after his errors against Australia.

It is likely to be tight in Kazan and a draw, on offer at n/a, may be the wise bet as the top two countries qualify from the group anyway for the semis so it is an outcome that would suit everyone concerned.

Recommended bet: Draw n/a.
