Champions League Round of 16 Preview
RB Leipzig return to Champions League action having finished 2nd in Group G. The German outfit went into the game in shaky form, having lost 3 of their last 5 Bundesliga games. However, they`ve recorded a 2-0 win against Union Berlin and a 2-2 draw against Augsburg, as they continue their recovery. Leipzig previously faced Madrid in the group stages in the 2022 UCL campaign, where they secured a 3-2 victory at home, and lost 2-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu. The Red Bulls have lost just 1 home game in the UCL this season, and only 2 home games in the Bundesliga, giving them a good chance of giving Madrid a problem on Tuesday night.
Real Madrid go into the game in good form, having lost just 1 of their last 27 games in all competitions. They`ve also won all 5 of their UCL group-stage games, finishing Group C at the summit. All eyes were on Jude Bellingham, who has either scored or assisted in all five of his UCL, although he will miss the opening game of the R16 due to an injury. Nevertheless, Real Madrid has been in flying form this season with the likes of Rodrygo and Vini Jr. causing havoc in all competitions this season. Overall, the Madridistas seem to be the superior outfit going into this game. We expect it to be an exciting game with both teams scoring, but Real Madrid to win.
Lazio secured their UCL knockout spot by finishing 2nd in the UCL Group E, having lost just 2 games. However, the Italian side has hit a slight speed bump in form, as they`ve won just 2 of their last 5 games in all competitions. They do go into the Round of 16 clash on the back of a 3-1 victory over Cagliari in the Serie A, giving them the needed morale boost. They`ve also been good at home this season, having lost 2 home games in the Serie A and are yet to lose a home game in the Champions League this season. These 2 sides met in the Round of 16 back in 2021, although both legs went Bayern`s way, and the odds favour the same this year.
Bayern Munich enjoyed a high-flying UCL campaign so far, having won 4 and drawn 2 of their Champions League group stage games, finishing at the summit. Although Bayern have enjoyed a good season so far, they go into the game on the back of a 3-0 embarrassment against Bayer Leverkusen, who are now 5 points clear of the Bavarians in the Bundesliga. Despite Bayern`s shaky backline (having conceded at least 1 goal in their last 3 games), they are still a mammoth outfit and their last Round of 16 clash against Lazio ended 6-2 over the 2 legs. Lazio is maintaining a 27-game streak without a goalless match since mid-October, so we expect both teams to score, however ultimately, it is hard to go against Bayern, so we expect Bayern to win.
